e know; because at the Cariboo Mines, fifty-fivemiles north, weapons wTith the mark of Spain uponthem have been found. The Indians have alwaysheld the springs in great veneration, and BrighamYoung blessed them when he visited the place in1868. It is more than probable that the first whitemen of recent times who were here were members ofthe old Rocky Mountain Fur Company. A party ofthem were at Salt Lake in 1824 and wintered there.They made explorations north, and traced the courseof several rivers in the adjacent territory, but wehave no record of a visit to Soda Springs. In 1826many trappers and hunters were exploring the Yel-lowstone and Bear Rivers, and it is supposed visitedhere. The springs were a favorite spot in the earlyfifties for overland travelers to stop and recruit, andall through the later years, when the great trains ofgold-seekers and emigrants passed over the old Oregontrail, they paused at Soda Springs to refresh them-selves and rest their jaded horses and cattle. 27

There are no Indian legends connected with thesprings. The modern noble red man regards thesebubbling miracles as big medicine, and refuses todrink of them. They would go miles to get fresh run-ning water rather than touch the springs. Soda Creekruns sparkling down and empties south into BearRiver. The basin in which these springs are locatedis about twelve miles long by four wide. The area ofspring district usually visited is about six miles bythree, but the whole country is impregnated for along distance away up to Blackfoot. There are butfew springs of any consequence north of this point—that is, into the upper country of Montana and theadjacent mountain country. There are thirteen springs within a radius of one-half a mile from the hotel—the first one, 200 feetfrom the hotel,, bubbles from the top of a conicalmound. Swan Lake, six miles east, is a beautifulsheet of water of unknown depth; Formation Springs,five miles northeast, shows some curious effects oflime deposit, petrif
