The park embraces an area of 3,000square miles, has an average elevation of about8,000 feet above sea level, and is encircled by magnifi-cent mountain ranges. THE APPROACH TO YELLOWSTONE PARK. By entering the Yellowstone Xational Park by theBeaver Canon Route, the tourist is taken direct intothe midst of the marvelous sights of that paragon ofwonders. Instead of finding himself seventy-fivemiles away from any other features of the park (as hedoes at Mammoth Hot Springs), he is landed at theLower Geyser Basin, the true pivotal point for thevarious basins, the lake and the Grand Cailon. Thestarting point for this desirable route is from theBeaver Canon Station, on the Utah and NorthernDivision of the Union Pacific System, and thence for-ward through a country attractive in the highest de-gree with river, mountain, canon and lake scenery.The terminus is in the Lower Geyser Basin at thehotel, within sight of the Great Fountain Geyser. 37

The advantages of this route are easily seen. With-out really doing extra staying, the traveler is madefamiliar with a portion of the West which is of greatinterest. lie sees the celebrated Tetons. HenrysLake, the birthplace of an important branch of theSnake River : that river itself, where it rolls, a clear,glassy stream through pine woods; the TygheePa—, the south fork of the Madison, and is broughtinto the very heart of wonderland. The start is made in the morning. We traversethe Camas Meadows, from whence the Tetons arefirst seen ; the Antelope Valley, ford the Shot GunRiver, and at sundown are at the night station on thebanks of the Snake River. The Snake River is here no longer a turbid stream,flowing between walls of basalt, but bright, clear andglassy, gliding between banks intensely green, and itssliding mirror broken only by leaping trout.
