On July 27th a monument was built on a granite ledgenear the old trail between Paradise Park and LongmiresSprings, and directly opposite the glaciers snout. Thismonument was about ten feet to the left and above thetrail. The bearing from this point to the end of theglacier was about N. 8o° 30 W., magnetic. The angleincluded between the end of the glacier and the right-handedge of Gibraltar Rock was 70° 53, and between the endof the glacier and the summit of Tumtum Mountain,540 00. It is hoped that this will help future observersto determine something positive concerning the retreatof the glaciers snout. The writer desires to express his thanks to Mr. JamesHutchinson, and other members of the Sierra Club, with-out whose aid the measurements could not have beenmade. This includes the Tehipite and Paradise valleys andthe High Sierra, where the two main branches of the KingsRiver—the South and Middle forks—and their tributaries rise.The Sierra Club has visited this region on two of its annualOutings—in 1902 and again in 1906.
