English: Approaching Monticello, the plantation home of President Thomas Jefferson, located in Charlottesville, Virginia. The neoclassical style house was designed by Jefferson and built in stages from 1772-1826. Monticello was designated a National Historical Landmark in 1960 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1966. The plantation and nearby University of Virginia campus (which Jefferson designed) were designated an UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. |
