Every nowand then the tragedy of Agnes Bernau is performedin some theatre. It is a tragedy greatly belovedby the common people. And Agnes Bernau liveson in the hearts of those who are interested inShakespeares words: For aught that ever I could read, Could ever hear by tale or history, The course of true love never did run smooth. Philippina Welser, married to Duke Ferdinand ofAustria, and Clara von Detten, consort of Frederickthe Victorious of the Palatinate, had happier weddedlives. All the rich goods of the Orientpassing through the famous German house atVenice were carried over the Alps to Augsburg,and were thence distributed over Germany. Thenits merchants were princes, and its bankers richerthan most of the kings of the earth. We recallthat scene in the life of Charles V. when old Fuggerastonished him by throwing into the fire all thepromissory notes Charles had signed. SurelyCharles must have thought this a new way to payold debts. That fire must have warmed his oldbones and made his heart glad. Becker the painterhas portrayed for us this scene, and depicted theastonished joy on the face of the emperor as hesees his indebtedness vanishing in smoke. Thepicture hangs in the National Gallery at Berlin. The fortifications are demolished now, andthough here and there an old gate or picturesquefive-cornered tower is left, yet the arts of peacehave taken possession of the vacant space and dom
