The long, dismal night wore away at last, theII 27 418 SIBERIA storm abated a little towards morning, and soon after day-break onr driver made his appearance with ropes, crow-bars, three fresh horses, and a stalwart peasant from aneighboring village. They soon extricated us from ourdifficulties, and early in the forenoon we drove into thelittle settlement of Bibalskaya, and alighted from our pa-roska after fourteen hours exposure to a winter gale on adesolate steppe without sleep, food, or drink. When we hadwarmed and refreshed ourselves with hot tea in a peasantscabin, we ate what breakfast we could get, slept two or threehours on a plank bench, and then with fresh horses and anew driver went on our way.
