Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Shwe-Shwe is the favourite fabric of Southern Africa, a discharged indigo cotton fabric originating in Central Europe.

When purchased it is as stiff as cardboard due the starch essential during the highly refined discharge process. Here several pieces are seen soaking in a plastic bowl of water to remove the starch.

Whereas it was once worn only by traditionally-minded African women, now it has also been embraced by 'High Fashion'. It is almost always used in garments employing various related patterns pieced together, and most garments are unique, a collaboration between the sewist and the wearer. Traditionally, white 'rick-rack' might be added to enhance the decorative quality.
