Summary
[edit]DescriptionShropshire Union Canal in Rye Hill Cutting, Staffordshire - geograph.org.uk - 1383031.jpg |
English: Shropshire Union Canal in Rye Hill Cutting, Staffordshire. Opened in 1835, there are many long straight sections of this canal which required either embankments or cuttings to avoid the need for locks. Although this was a more difficult procedure than following the contours of the land, 18th century style, the end route was shorter and the speed for horse drawn working boats could be maintained with (hopefully) no stoppages. In the cuttings, mature trees lining the canal do help bind the soil and prevent landslide into the canal, but branches or even whole trees frequently crash into the water, temporarily blocking the way. BWB are quite quick to clear such obstructions as soon as they are informed of them. |
