Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Shropshire Union Canal at Woodseaves Cutting, Shropshire. Thomas Telford engineered this canal (formerly the Birmingham and Liverpool Junction Canal) to include as few locks as possible, and the shortest distance possible, avoiding just meandering along the contours. He did this despite the expense and considerable difficulty by constructing long cuttings and embankments. Railways were rapidly encroaching on the canal companies' trade by 1835 when this canal was opened, so avoidance of delays for the working boats was paramount.
