A metal stand supports a device with two rods of different heights that can spin to mark the perspective of something viewed from the fire lookout. The finders are set to match the two heights of either sides of a mountain peak viewed through the building's window.

The Fire Finder helped rangers determine the locations and distance of wildfire smoke sightings observed from fire lookouts.
