English: This seldom seen photo is of Shotton's Restaurant and gas pumps located in Northbrook at the present site of The Pine Grove Motel (across from The Beer Store).

The following was the recollection of Ellery Thompson and written by Eileen Flieler:
'Tom Killingbeck bought this garage near the end of World War II. We are not sure who built it or when it was built. Tom did not have a mechanic's license but Elmore Peterson did so he was hired and his license was the one on the wall.
One section of the building was a variety store where Tom sold basics like bread and milk. There was a big stove and lots of seating including the front seat of an old car. Men gathered here in the winter to tell stories (and, of course, us kids to listen to them). At that time very few families had cars so if we played baseball in another village we each paid Tom 25 cents and all piled in the back of his truck.
Tom sold the business about 1955 to Ed and Ada Shotton and Ada's sister and her husband. The partnership did not last. Shottons turned the business into a restaurant and kept Shell gas at the front pump.

During Shotton's time a small motel was built on the property as well as two cabins. Ed Shotton kept his job in Hamilton and Ada worked as secretary at the Kaladar Police Station. In the winter of 1962 a mysterious fire leveled the restaurant. It was never rebuilt but the motel is still operating under the current ownership of Carol and Larry Pealow (Pine Grove Motel).'
