SHOSHONE. 171 yet I am sure that none will regret the exertion.At the base of the trail the ground is coveredwith water-soaked timber that has been hurledover the Falls and tossed upon the shore; andin the crevices of the high vertical walls of thegorge are moss-grown cedars, dripping withmoisture. Among the more prominent landmarks aroundthe Falls are Deweys Bluff, one thousand andfifty feet high, Sentinel Rock, Lovers Leap, —that never had a tragedy, — Creightons Bluff,Walgamott Island, and the Natural Bridge. Be-neath the latter, as through a frame, one seesthe silvery front of the Great Fall, and in thedistance the bold outlines of Deweys Bluff. Thewalls of the canon are everywhere cut into gigan-tic basaltic and trachytic columns, whose coloringis red, yellow, brown, and black. The scenery near the Twin Falls is made inter-esting by the geological features.
