Summary
[edit]DescriptionShort Tunnel - geograph.org.uk - 583064.jpg |
English: Short Tunnel 'The Lumsdale Valley is one of the best examples of a water-powered industrial archaeological site in Great Britain. It is unusual to see such extensive use of water power in such a relatively small area. Since at least the 16th century, the Bentley brook has provided the power for a series of mills in the valley, some of which continued in industrial use until the 1930s.'
- Quoted text from the Arkwright Society: http://www.arkwrightsociety.org.uk/html/lp_index.html - This short tunnel may have been part of the route whereby bleached items were taken across the brook to the fields opposite to dry. For more information see Peter Drabble's page here: http://freespace.virgin.net/pat.gaskell/lumsdale.html Return to the photographs of the 583054. |
