Erläuterungen
[edit]Die Tabelle [1] wurde dafür benutzt. Die neueste Dokumentation für diese Datenquelle ist Jones, P.D. and Moberg, A. (2003). Zusätzlich wird noch der Verlauf der El-Niño-Südlichen Oszillation und die Periode vulkanischer Störung durch den Ausbruch des Pinatubo, der die Stratosphäre durchbrach, durch Balken dargestellt. Die vulkanische Periode ist definiert als der Zeitraum, in dem auf Satellitenphotos vulkanische Asche in der oberen Atmospäre erkennbar war (Luo et al. 2002). Die El-Niño-/La-Niña-Perioden sind hier definiert als Zeiten, zu denen das 5-Monatsmittel des Niño-3 Index, s. auch [2], vom Mittelwert (über diese 25 Jahre) um mehr als 0.5 °C abwich. Viele der jährlichen Temperaturabweichungen vom Trend können erklärt werden durch die Abgabe (während El Niño) oder Aufnahme (während La Niña) von Wärmeenergie durch die Ozeane. Der Ausbruch des Pinatubo, einer der größten des Jahrhunderts, könnte die globale Temperatur gesenkt haben als Resultat der ausgeschleuderten Asche und Sulfate.
