Summary

Description
English: The AMS Short Course on the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite-R Series (GOES-R) and Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS) was held January 10, 2016, prior to the start of the 96th AMS Annual Meeting.

This course introduced users to the new capabilities made possible by NOAA’s next-generation weather satellites. New measurements from the GOES-R series Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) and Geostationary Lightning Mapper (GLM) and the JPSS Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) will produce more timely, detailed, and accurate weather data than ever before.

Through a mix of oral presentations and hands-on exercises with observed, proxy and simulated data, short course participants experienced many applications to improve forecasts and warnings of high-impact weather and environmental phenomena.

Presentations from the course as well as links to exercises and additional imagery, education, and training information can be found at go.usa.gov/cPJUR.
