July 25, 2018 North Slope, Alaska Description: An oil spill removal organization’s (OSRO) spill response operating team (SROT) deploys self-inflating boom from a shoreside boom storage reel during a BSEE government initiated unannounced exercise (GIUE). The boom is pulled out to sea by response vessels where it will be placed to trap and corral spilled oil. Response equipment such as this are staged across the North Slope in special containers to resist the elements and be ready for use in a spill. BSEE Preparedness Analysts from the Oil Spill Preparedness Division (OSPD) regularly inspect these types of equipment and operations during GIUEs and other regulatory activities to ensure compliance with regulations and to monitor the overall vigor of the oil spill preparedness and response community.
