Text Appearing Before Image:
rower coastplatform or strandfladen the coast was first deeply in-dented by fjords, and the platform later cut during glacial andinterglacial periods by wave attack from both the ocean andthe fjord waters, aided by subaerial denudation.^^ We mustdoubt the validity of the theoretical grounds on which he thuslimits the power of waves in the open ocean; and must like-wise doubt whether small waves in sheltered fjords, formed asthey are on the surface of deep water and therefore unarmedwith debris, and subject to reflection from nearly vertical rockwalls without opportunity for erosion, could materially aid inthe process of reducing a land mass to a submarine platform.Neither do his arguments in favor of the glacial age of the coastplatform appear convincing*^ But the facts presented by thisauthor leave no room to doul^t the existence along the westcoast of Norway of a wave-carved platform which is certainly50 to 75 miles broad, and possibly as much as 170 miles broadin some of its parts.
