English: Shoemakers Land, Canongate This sculptured shield marks the former site of the long-vanished guildhall of the Edinburgh Cordiners (shoemakers). It depicts their arms, namely a crown and the paring knife of St.Crispin, patron saint of shoemakers, over an open Bible displaying the words of the 133rd psalm: "Behold how good a thing it is and how becoming well, together such as brethren are, in unity to dwell". For this reason, the building became popularly known as "Bible Land" |
