Description |
English: In 1897 and 1898 so many people wanted to go north to the Klondike gold fields that all kinds of ships were pressed into service. Some were sailing ships which had carried passengers, coal, lumber, or salmon up and down the west coast of the United States. This 1898 photo shows the wooden sailing ship "Lucille" loaded with gold miners and their supplies. The wooden vessel had been built in Maine in 1874. Before joining the gold rush fleet in 1898, the ship had carried passengers and freight along the west coast and in Alaska. Original photo was copied by Asahel Curtis. Caption on border: Asahel Curtis, Commercial Photographer, 625 Colman Block, Seattle. Handwritten on mount: Sailing ship "Lucille" loading for Klondike, 1898, in Seattle. Caption by MOHAI staff.
