Description
English: Strong winds and heavy cloud cover over the South Sandwich Islands combined to create a stunning pattern in late March, 2017. As the winds blow past the rugged and tall landscape of the islands, it sweeps around and over the steep terrain, leaving a wake in the atmosphere that looks much like a ship’s wake as it cuts through water. Such cloud formations are named “ship-waved-shaped clouds” and occur regularly in this part of the world. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Aqua satellite captured this true-color image on March 22.
