Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Looking north along Sherman Drive at the southern slave quarters on the grounds of Arlington House (the Robert E. Lee Memorial) at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia, in the United States.

Two buildings were constructed, along with the house, between 1803 and 1818. Both are two-story brick structures perpendicular to the main house and formally aligned with it. They are Neoclassical in design, with pebble-dash stucco exteriors. The south-facing facade of the southern slave quarters was decorated in a Neoclassical style, as it faced the formal garden. The main entrance, however, faced north onto a utilitarian yard. The western third of the building originally served as a sleeping room for the slave Thorton Gray, his wife, and their six children. The center room served multiple purposes, but was used as a smokehouse and a wash room at times. The eastern room served as a storeroom for food and slave rations, and was kept locked. The hedges are similar to those planted by the Custis and Lee families to screen the area from visitors approaching up the road from the southeast.

As of 2010, the slave quarters were used as storage and for housing cemetery personnel. They underwent a significant restoration and conservation in 2011.

Sherman Drive was laid out by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1864, shortly after the estate was made a national cemetery.
