JPEG file comment | WERFF, Adriaen van der
(b. 1659, Kralingen, d. 1722, Rotterdam) Shepherd and Shepherdess 1689 Oil on panel, 59 x 48 cm Gemäldegalerie, Dresden The painting of the pastoral scene depicting the shepherd and the gracefully reclining shepherdess is an example of Van der Werff's early work. It already contains many classical elements, but still bears a strong resemblance to the work of his teacher, Eglon van der Neer. The painter surrounded the couple with all sorts of accessories, including plants, flowers, trees, architecture, a fountain, and classical statues. All this was intended to show that the couple are in a pleasure-garden and have decidedly amorous intentions.
