Summary

[edit]
Description

Sheila Kuehl was a former State Senator representing the Santa Monica area. She was one of the first openly gay politicians to serve in the California legislature.

Other gay pioneers in California state politics were Carole Migden and Mark Leno, and later Tom Ammiano, all of San Francisco. Before them, at the local level, San Francisco had Supervisor Harvey Milk, the first-ever elected gay public official in America, who was assassinated in 1978 alongside Mayor George Moscone.

Like most American LGBTs, they belong to the Democratic Party, which supports a slow but steady march toward full equal rights for LGBTs. Most surveys do seem to indicate that LGBTs are as reliable a Democratic voting bloc as Jews and African-Americans.
