Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Sheffield: Castle Square From the 1960s to 1994, this was known as the 'Hole in the Road' because it comprised a symmetrical, four-exit roundabout with one of those deep, uninviting pedestrian subways with access from the four corners, which had a couple of newsagent stands in the middle. It was filled in in the mid 90s when the tramway was installed and is now rather more attractive. Oddly, according to a signboard, it is not known whether Castle Square is named after Sheffield Castle or Barbara Castle, who was the transport minister when the hole in the road was put in.
