Title
Sheep Station at Bungaree
Description
In correspondence to G Brooks, S Nicol makes the following comments: "GN08606 & 8616 - Sheep Station at Bungaree - 1920s. (There are also similar views with adjacent numbers). The appearance of these photos indicates that they were taken at the same time - although this is not proven. One of them very closely resembles a photograph which hangs as an original framed print in the Bungaree woolshed - it was definitely taken at the same spot, a fact which can be judged from the vegetation lines and the hill lines in the background. And with such a massive mob of sheep it is highly unlikely to have been a different occasion. The photo at Bungaree was taken in 1906 (not the 1920s) and showed a mob of 1,960 sheep which had just walked to Bungaree from Paralana Station in the Northern Flinders Ranges (like Bungaree, Paralana Station was at that time run by the Hawker Family). The sheep were shorn shortly after their arrival. The particular interest of the photo at Bungaree is that it later became famous later when an engraving was made of it and it was used on both the 50 pound and 1000 pound Australian banknotes." - Date amended to reflect G Brooks' notes
