English: Shawl, cashmere type wool, woven with gold thread; `Cashmere type shawl with design of six vertical stripes with paisley cones; dark red ground with black wavy green, blue and gold thread, fringes at ends. (signature embroidered by hand on edge cream coloured with number 3424) This shawl was seen by Miss White, textile curator of the Edinburgh Museum, and photographed in 1973, "1850 Society for the Encouragement of the Arts. Manufactures and Commerce Competition no.98. Specimen of Shawl weaving, being the first attempt to produce an increased effect by the introduction of gold thread in the shuttle, manufactured and exhibited by E Blakely." Miss Clabburn of Stranger Hall, Norwich, textile curator of the Norwich Museum, says- "this one answers to a Norwich style made by Edward Blakely about 1850." Gold wrapped silk (yellow).
