Description

c/n 36 Built in 1991, the Nemesis is described as the most successful aircraft in air racing history. Between 1991 and 1999 it won 45 of the 48 race events it was entered into, included nine consecutive Reno Gold National Championships, finished as the International Formula One points champion from 1994 through to 1999 and also set 16 world speed records for its class. It won the Louis Blèriot Medal of the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale for greatest achievement in speed during 1993, 1996 and 1998 and the Pulitzer Trophy for air racing speed records in 1993, 1994, 1995 and 1999. The innovative design was awarded the George Owl Trophy in 1991 and reached a top speed of 290mph while powered only by a 100hp Continental O-200. Nemesis was retired at the end of the 1999 season and donated to the Smithsonian Institute. She is seen on display at the Steven F. Udvar Hazy Center as part of the National Air and Space Museum.
