Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Sharp's monument. This now very tranquil spot saw the murder of Archbishop James Sharp on May 3rd 1679. At the time this was the main road into St Andrews from the west and Sharp was returning home to St Andrews with his daughter after a visit to Edinburgh. His coach was overtaken by Covenanters at this spot who thought it was the Sheriff's coach. Sharp was an even bigger prize and was much hated for changing sides in this religious war. He was murdered or assassinated depending on which side you supported, either way he was dispatched to his maker with speed. The pyramid and its Yews are a memorial to the Banff-born Archbishop. It is now a national monument. East face of monument with inscription
