Title |
English: Shark Tooth in Mammoth Cave Wall |
||||
Description |
English: A small ruler is held behind a pointy gray shark tooth as it protrudes from rocky surface. The groundwater that cut Mammoth Cave’s extensive underground passageways pass though Late Mississippian marine limestones that contain vertebrate remains, primarily those of cartilaginous fishes like sharks. Slow dissolution of the limestone, constant temperatures, and protection from many erosive elements leads to a very good environment for the preservation of fossils.
