Description

These beautifully carved figures in a pillar in Sri Meenakshi Temple, Madurai depict an allegorical story of the childhood of Lord Krishna that puts forth the concept of the state of Sharanagati , the total surrunder to Him and His will. The story goes thus: Krishna used to play pranks on the womenfolk and girls ,who were known as Gopis who had immense love for Krishna. When the Gopis were bathing in the river,Krishna took away their dresses and hid them in the branches of the tree on which he was sitting. The Gopis , after bathing, pleaded with Krishna to give back their dresses .Krishna did not yield easily. The Gopis were hiding their bodies in shyness with their hands. Only when they lifted both their hands and surrendered to Him , he gave back their dresses.

The story symbolically means that only if one totally surrenders oneself to the Lord, one will be absolved and protected by the Lord. The dresses and shyness about body are symbols of the Ego which is a hindrance to self-realisation. If the ego is given up one can identify oneself with God.
