Text Appearing Before Image:
the last farewell word, hearing not thelast notes of the music, seeing not the lastgleam of sunset, as the light dies from the sky.It was a sad parting, but the memory of the 280 SHAKESPEARES ENGLAND place can never be despoiled of its loveliness. As I write these words I stand again in thecool, dusky silence of the poets church, withits air of stately age and its fragrance of clean-liness, while the light of the western sun, broken into rays of gold and ruby, streamsthrough the painted windows and softly fallsupon the quaint little galleries and decorouspews; and, looking forth through the low, arched door, I see the dark, melancholy boughsof the dreaming yew-tree, and, nearer, ashadow of rippling leaves in the clear sunshineof the churchyard path: and all the time agentle voice is whispering, in the chambers ofthought: No farther seek his merits to disclose, Or draw his frailties from their dread abode,— (There they alike in trembling hope repose)The bosom of his Father and his God.

t -^ 3 kq oq a; oq XXI. A GLIMPSE OF ELY. Gray and sombre London, gloomy beneathvast clouds of steel and bronze, is once moreleft. Old Highgate flits by and we roll throughthe network of little towns that fills all thespace between Hornsey and Tottenham. Thecountry along our course is one of exceptionalinterest, and but that Buggins the Builder hasmarred it, by making the houses alike, it wouldbe one of peculiar beauty. Around Totten-ham the dwellings are interspersed withmeadows, and there are market-gardens andnurseries of flowers,—the bright green ofcarrot-tops and of the portly cabbage beingpleasantly relieved by masses of brilliant holly-hock. Broad fields ensue, cultivated to theutmost and smiling with plenty, and aroundsome of the houses there are beautiful green 281 282 SHAKESPEARES ENGLAND lawns, divided with hedges of hawthorn. Thecountry, for the most part, is level, and afine effect is produced upon the landscape bysingle tall trees or by isolated groups of them, especial
