t is important is the practicalaction we take in furthering or discouraging,and it is here that understanding is of essentialimportance. It is a fact, for instance, that we have inour midst the persistence of fossils of severalstages of sexual habit. In regard to thesewe know better what to do or what not todo when we see them in their historical sig-nificance. Sex-festivals, as in some parts ofRussia, for instance, with their strange minglingof religious emotion and sexual license, arenot inexplicable perversions of a pathologicalcharacter so much as survivals of a primevalcivilisation. Other instances may be foundnearer home, e. g. in that persistent anddeliberate ante-nuptial experimenting as to the fertility of a proposed marriage, whichhas lingered so long in northern countries.
