| Description |
English: Typical Up coal train leaving Severn Tunnel Junction Yards, with a pilot to help it through the Tunnel. View westward, towards Newport etc.: ex-GW South Wales main line. The train is leaving the Up Yard, headed by '5101' 2-6-2T No. 4137 (built 11/39) piloting '2884' 2-8-0 No. 3848 (built 5/42). Assistance was needed by all heavy trains through the Severn Tunnel, which entailed 3½ miles of 1-in-90 down to the middle then 3½ miles at 1-in-100 up to Pilning, a short level then 3 more miles at 1-in-100 to Patchway - although the pilot usually came off at Pilning. |
