Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Severn Bridge station signal box
This was the signal box at Severn Bridge station, bizarrely left in situ when the rest of the station was demolished. This was taken in 1992 or early 1993; I went back a few years ago and was not particularly surprised to discover that the signal box was no longer there. However, I was very much surprised to discover later that the signal box was rescued by a man who offered the farmer who owned it two hundred quid for it, and who restored it and erected it in his garden as an office. There's an interesting story attached to this 'box. On the night of 25th October 1960, two petroleum barges collided with the Severn railway bridge in thick fog, bringing down a two spans. Five men of the barge crews were killed. The death toll would have been much higher but for the fact that a working party strengthening the bridge had retired to this very signal box at the time to listen to the radio broadcast of a boxing match between Henry Cooper and Karl Muller.
