35 mm slide; color. Scientific Classification: Kingdom: Animalia; Phylum: Chordata; Class: Mammalia; Order: Primates; Family: Cercopithecidae; Genus: Macaca; Genus species: Macaca mulatta. Animal characteristics: Head-Body Length: 47-64 cm; Weight: 5.4-7.7 kg; Identification: The rhesus macaque has a brown coat with paler undersides. Its face and rump are red and naked; Habitat: Forests, urban areas; Diet: Omnivore: fruit, berries, grains, leaves, buds, seeds, flowers, bark, small invertebrates and vertebrates, eggs; Reproduction: The gestation period for these monkeys is 166 days long. Births occur between February and May or September and October. Usually only one offspring is born, but twins do occasionally occur. Babies are weaned at one year of age; Social Structure: Rhesus macaques gather in groups of 8-180 members; Behavior: Time is spent on both the ground and in the trees. Most activity occurs during the daylight hours; Status: No special status; Interesting Facts: Rhesus macaques like to enter the water and are agile swimmers. In India where love of animals is part of the religion, these monkeys have very successfully adapted to man's civilization.
