General Schuyler had com-mand of the whole northern division of the army, assisted byAdjutant-General Gates, who, in June, was made a Brigadier-Gene-ral, and appointed to the command of the forces in Canada. Con-gress also voted Gates a reinforcement of six thousand men, andwith these he was to attempt in Canada to retrieve the severelosses of the previous year. It was deemed necessary to maintain the command of the lakes.The Americans had fifteen small vessels upon the two lakes, whilethe British had not a single boat. The vessels of the former carried,in all, ninety-six guns, fourteen of which were eighteen-pounders,twenty-three twelves, and the rest six and four-pounders.
