and then suckingthem. llie most beautiful of these poi bowls aremade of the native koii-zifood. Nearly everyone visit-ing the Islands eats poi, but not in kanaka style. Atthe hotels it is served like mush and eaten with sug-arand cream, or made into a cocktail and served as anappetizer. Yesterday afternoon we visited Honolulus largestpublic park, named for Kalakauas Queen, Kapiolani.It is situated on the beach five miles south of the citv,and contains the aquarium. I had seen many beau-tiful Hawaiian fishes at the market, but here therewere hundreds of them with the most gorgeous color-ings, the most striking contrasts and brilliant hues—almost beyond belief. Perhaps one of the most pe-culiar was a bright orange fish with a flat circularbody, long pointed bill and quill-shaped fins. But thedarling of the specimens was a dainty baby-bluething, with gauzy ribbon-like streamers trailing farout from his back and tail.
