Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Settlement Lagoon This is the first of three settlement lagoons dug into the top of a 373664 at Morton Colliery.

The lagoon was part of a pumping scheme that was needed to prevent other working pits in the area from flooding.

Water was pumped up one of the mineshafts and then through pipes up the spoil heap to the aerators in the middle of the lagoon. The water, which was heavily contaminated, flowed from one lagoon to another and so on through a total of seven lagoons, before it ran down a brick lined cascade to join local water courses to eventually flow into Westwood Brook. The lagoons are deep and there is a red-coloured sediment beneath the surface.

With the closure of the mines that benefited from this scheme the facility was closed down and now appears abandoned. A second spoil heap has been landscaped and is now the site for the 373634.

From nearby this viewpoint there are a number of views across nearby countryside: (all measurements are approximations) 374453, which is on a bearing of 030° and 2.2kilometres distant. 374435, which is on a bearing of 130° and 1kilometre distant. 374500, which is on a bearing of 315° and 0.9kilometre distant.

374469, which is on a bearing of 355° and 0.8kilometre distant.
