Plus le liquide a d'affinité pour le support, plus la goutte sera étalée ; autrement dit, plus l'angle de contact sera petit. Parmi ces six paires, on peut donc dire que les deux composés ayant le plus d'affinité sont l'huile de ricin ("castor oil") et le Teflon, et ceux qui en ont le moins l'eau ("water") et le Teflon. La mesure d'angle de contact permet d'estimer la valeur de la tension de surface.
