Sergeant 2545 Alleyne WOLFE 86th (Royal County) Regiment of Foot Medals. L-R Born 1820 Distinguished Conduct Medal. Indian Mutiny Medal, (1857). Long Service and Good Conduct Medal. He was born 1820 to Thomas Wolfe of Clonakilty County Cork. 15 February 1853 residing at Corn Market Street, St Marys Shandon, Cork (Source marriage certificate of his son, Alleyne) occupation, Turney Key at County Goal. He joined the British Army in 1844 served throughout the Indian Mutiny. Promoted to Sargent Major whilst in India. His Distinguished Conduct Medal was for an action where he “"slew three Sepoys in single combat at the storming of Jhansi" He won one of only four medals granted to his regiment during the Mutiny, two DCMs and two VCs. He married Sarah McClelland about 1845 1864 he residing with his wife and son at St Margaret Street, Bradford, Wiltshire, occupation, Sergeant. In October 1866 with his wife Sarah and children at Church Street, Occupation Drill Sergeant with the in the Wiltshire Melita, Warminster. 1869 he was he was Drill Sergeant instructor of Volunteers Wiltshire Militia. Residing with his wife Sarah and children, at Obleisk, (Silver Street) Warminster, Wiltshire. (The Obelisk stands on a triangular island at the junction of Church Street (ahead), Silver Street (right) and Vicarage Street (left). 1872 he was Sergeant Major of Volunteers. He later returned with his family to County Cork He died (using Alleyne) 31 May 1889 aged 69 years of Dropsey which he suffered from for 6 month prior to death at Fan Street, Mallow Cork City. His profession, army pensioner. His daughter Sarah Wolfe was present at his death.
