UNESCO World Heritage, Royal Tombs of the Joseon Dynasty Seosamneung Royal Tombs ' Yereung' Yereung is the tomb of King Cheoljong, 25th monarch of Joseon, and his queen, Queen Cheorin. Cheoljong was born in 1831 as the third son of Jeongye Daewongun. King Heonjong passed away after 15 years of rule with no heir, so the Queen Grandmother (Queen Sunwon, queen of King Sunjo) called Cheoljong, who was living on the island of Ganghwado, to be the next king. He became king at the age of 18 in the palace of Changdeokgung's Injeongjeon. At the beginning of Cheoljong's reign the Queen Grandmother ruled in on his behalf. After that, Cheoljong could not properly run the government due to influence from the Queen Grandmother and her family, and he passed away in Changdeokgung at the age of 32 in December, 1863, the 14th year of his reign. Queen Cheorin was the daughter of Yeongeun Dawongun. She became Cheoljong's queen in 1851, and she passed away at the age of 41, in 1878.
