Summary

[edit]
Description You can tell it is a raccoon track by counting the toes and looking at the general shape of the paw print. There are five toes all together. Animals in the weasel family like badger, mink, marten and skunk have five toes, so do raccoons, beaver, and opossum. In general, mammals like mink and martin have very round shaped tracks so that would rule them out for this track as the toes are all fairly close together and their tracks are usually found in pairs two next to each other unlike these which were more spread out. It is too big for a skunk, beaver seems highly unlikely as everything was frozen over and there is no lodge in the area, it is the wrong habitat for a badger, and wrong shape for an opossum. That leaves the raccoon – the tracks seem to fit the size and shape of a raccoon which is common on the refuge. My car's remote is about 2 1/2 inches long.
