| Description | This tree is completly burned through but as you can see the top of the tree is still alive. It has a plunge cut near the base of the tree which was made several years ago as part of a fire study. The plunge cuts were made in about 250 of our oldest trees across the refuge as part of a study on the refuge's fire history. Each of the wedges were sanded then the researcher counted the tree rings backward to find out what year the tree burned. He could even tell what time of year the tree burned. With this information a detailed fire history of the refuge was constructed giving managers an idea of how often wildfires occured on the refuge back as far as the mid-1500s (we have a good fire history for the last 350 years). This trees cut burned the center of the tree, however the tree is still alive. There is a photo of hole burned through the middle of the tree a couple of pages ahead. Credit: Sara Hollerich, USFWS. |
