Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The island of La Palma in the Canary Islands is going through a seismic crisis, with more than 4,200 earthquakes recorded between 11 and 16 September 2021, some reaching a magnitude above 3.4. Scientists from the Instituto Volcanológico de Canarias attribute the intense seismic activity to magma rising inside a volcanic structure that has been dormant since 1971. However, it is not yet clear if this crisis will culminate in a volcanic eruption. On this image, acquired by one of the Copernicus Sentinel-1 satellites on 16 September 2021, the seismic swarm is geo-localised. It also includes indicators for the epicentres and magnitude of the earthquakes that have occurred since the beginning of the seismo-volcanic crisis, as recorded by the Instituto Geográfico Nacional of Spain. Data provided by the Copernicus Sentinel missions are particularly useful for studying volcanic phenomena and deformations induced by earthquakes, enabling timely responses in times of crises.
