Paris, summer 2003 Sandy (my niece) and I were on a HomeExhange program with a woman in the sixth arrondisement--my favorite haunt. We were on our way to St. Michele from an abortive trip to a museum that had turned out to be under reconstruction. We had managed to get to Paris in time for the worst heat wave Europe had ever had. Even the snow on Mt. Blanc had melted--for the first time ever--and the elderly were dropping like flies. Paris does not approve of air conditioners, much less fans, which couldn't be had for love or money--we tried: Not the love, just the money. Here we were walking back to St. Michele alongside the Seine--even the sight of water helping to cool us off. The usual sunbathers were not to be seen--they usally line the Seine-- probably seeking shelter somewhere indoors. We barely made it back to St. Michete, where I downed two liters of water, contrary to my usual demi-litre of vin blanc. |
