Summary
[edit]DescriptionSegsbury Camp - southern ramparts - geograph.org.uk - 1194163.jpg |
English: Segsbury Camp - southern ramparts This is a view of the southern ramparts of this iron-age hillfort two miles south of Wantage http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iron_Age . It also shows part of the flat ground (top left) within the perimeter which extends to 27 acres. The fort, which lies just north of the Ridgeway path on chalk subsoil, is also known as Letcombe Castle, after the village it overlooks on the north-western side. The site was excavated in 1871, and then in 1996-7 (Oxford School of Archaeology report: http://www.arch.ox.ac.uk/research/research_projects/ridgeway/segsbury ) and is thought to have been under periodic occupation between the 6th and 2nd centuries BC. Additional photographs of the fort ramparts are at http://www.pegasusarchive.org/ancientbritain/segsbury_camp.htm.
