Potential migration routes of wolves to the Japanese archipelago (A) The Japanese Pleistocene wolves migrated to the Japanese archipelago circa 57–35 ka. (B) The wolf population(s) that had genetic associations with Siberian Pleistocene wolves and the modern wolf lineage migrated to the archipelago circa 37–14 ka. (C) After the last glacial maximum, the wolves on the Japanese archipelago were completely isolated from those of the continent. The Japanese wolf (C. l. hodophilax), having an admixed genome of multiple Pleistocene wolf lineages, survived on Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu of the archipelago throughout the Holocene but became extinct in the early 1900s. Different colored wolves denote different populations. Each dashed arrow indicates a possible migration route from the north or the south. The map of Japan that is shown reflects the geography of the sea and shoreline at the last glacial maximum. |
