Ruta Ba^as
or Swedes . .
CULTURE OF RUTA BAGAS-Sow the seed about
a month earlier than the preceding varieties of
turnips. Ruta Bagas should be sown on ground en-
riched with well rotted manure, in drills two and one-
half feet apart, and should be tliinned to six to eight
inches apart in the row. Keep the weeds
thoroughly in check with the hoe or cultiva-
tor, and when the roots have grown full size,
and before hard freezing weather, pull them,
cut off the tops and store in a root cellar or
pit.
w
Ruta Bagas are sometimes sown
broadcast and left to take their
chances with the weeds and bugs,
but this method is only successful
on new clearing in which there is
no weed seed.
MONARCH.^-
OR TANKARD
American
Purple Top
Ruta Baga.
This is a yellow fleshed sort, having very large, tankard shaped
roots, with relatively small necks and tops. Color purplish-crim-
son above ground, yellow below; flesh very solid, fine grained and
of the best flavor. This very popular variety is also sold as Hursfs
Monarch, and Carter's Elephant. Pkt. 5c; Oz.lOc; 2 Oz. 15c;
3^ Lb. 20c; Lb. 60c.
This is a strain of Purple Top Yellow
Ruta Baga of American origin, selected
to a smaller top and much shorter neck
than is usually found, while the roots
grow to a large size and are of the flnest quality. We consider this one of the most desirable
kinds on our list. Pkt. 5c; Oz. 10c; 2 Oz. 15c; ^ Lb. 20c; Lb. 60c.

It can be used where it is unknown whether any enhancements have been made, as well as when the enhancements are clear but insufficient. For known raw unenhanced scans you can use an appropriate {{PD-old}} tag instead. For usage, see Commons:When to use the PD-scan tag.
