Summary

[edit]
Description
English: A thick stream of brown sediment muddied the waters of the North Sea in October, 2017. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Terra satellite acquired this true-color image on October 15, 2017.

The coast of the Netherlands can be seen in the east of this image, while England sits in the west. The heavy cloud over England marks rain over the region. The clouds may be associated with the remnants of Hurricane Ophelia which spun just offshore of Ireland and was moving towards England on October 15.

The brown and green sediments are heavy offshore, suggesting run-off from land. But they are most concentrated in the outlet of the Thames River, as well as along the path of the current created by the outflow of the Thames. The North Sea, especially between England and the Netherlands, is shallow and has a bottom rich in sediment. These sediments are easily pulled up from the sea floor, which lies no more than 50 meters (164 feet) below the surface, when heavy rain from large storms increase the outflow from the rivers in the region.
