Summary
[edit]DescriptionSediment-filled mudcracks (Kayenta Formation, Lower Jurassic; north of Bootlegger Canyon, west of Moab, Utah, USA) 1.jpg |
English: Redbeds with sediment-filled mudcracks in the Jurassic of Utah, USA.
This is the Kayenta Formation, a mixed siliciclastics unit of mostly fluvial origin (= deposited in river systems). The thick bed at top is the basal Navajo Sandstone. The irregular vertical structures are sediment-filled mudcracks. Given their width, depth, and spacing, the mudcrack polygons here are sizable (see also: www.flickr.com/photos/jsjgeology/32339908743). Stratigraphy: uppermost Kayenta Formation, Glen Canyon Group, Lower Jurassic Locality: along Corona Arch Trail, just north of Bootlegger Canyon & just east of the Colorado River, west of the town of Moab, eastern Utah, USA |
